In order to gain a better understanding of child-friendly rewards systems in progressional apps, I have decided to take a deeper look at the app Finch. I have used Finch quite a few times over the years, as it is a great solution to keeping up with daily tasks, and reflecting on your thoughts and mood, which acts as a method of therapy and self-help. It also provides “first aid” help for users that may be immediately struggling with something, including relaxation techniques and methods of grounding oneself to reduce panic and anxiety. It has a playful and child-friendly appearance but is targeted for users of all ages.

Visual/UI

Finch uses a prominent, friendly colour scheme that enforces playfulness and happiness. The colours used are bright and user-friendly, not too strong but not too light. Overall, the colour scheme is primarily made up of soft, pastel colours such as light blue and mint green. This evokes a soothing and calming effect for the app.

Fonts used throughout the app are mostly bold and large, which is both readable and accessible, and visually appealing. Important text is bolded, and supporting subtext is usually of lighter weight and a lighter colour.

Iconography and illustrations used throughout the app are simple and abstract. They are easy to follow and understand, allowing users of all ages to appreciate them.

Content

Finch offers various types of content, including articles, videos, and exercises, to promote mental well-being. It is clear the the creators of this app have had a clear understanding of user preferences and what content they have needed to tailor towards a wide range of users.

The app provides users with short-form content, some of which are 3-5 minute videos and concise articles. This provides users with a more on-the-go learning and progression lifestyle, and tailors towards decreasing attention spans.

The app also provides users with extensive guided mindfulness exercises and relaxation techniques, which provides users with practical tools for improving their mental health.
